FEMALE INFERTILITY CAUSES AND TREATMENT

By Olajide Yusuf

Female infertility is the failure of a woman to achieve a clinical pregnancy after 12 months of unprotected sexual intercourse with fertile male partner. Primary infertility occurs in couples who have not had any child before while secondary infertility is a difficulty in couples to have more children after having one or more child before.

CAUSES OF FEMALE INFERTILITY

Female infertility is usually caused by many factors ranging from infection, aging, abnormal growth in the womb, mistakes from surgical operations, unhealthy lifestyle and many as follows:

1. Blocked fallopian tubes: fallopian tubes are female reproductive organs that connect the ovaries and the uterus. Conception often happens in the fallopian tubes before moving to the uterus for implantation. If the tube is blocked the sperm will not be able to get to the eggs to fertilize it.

2. Fibroids: uterine fibroids or myomas are non-cancerous tumors of muscle tissues in the uterus which grow to form mass of tissues in the uterus. Fibroids can cause infertility by changing the shape of the uterus or cervix which affect the penetration and movement of sperm in the womb. Over-growth of fibroids can lead to fallopian tube blockage.

3. Age: A woman is born with all the eggs she is going to have in her lifestyle. Her eggs age with her decreasing in quality and quantity. Female fertility is usually high at age 20-25 and started to reduce from age 30-35. At age 40 the chances of getting pregnant monthly is 5%. This estimate varies in women who practice natural healthy feeding habit as many of our women who eat natural healthy foods can get pregnant at 50 years.

4. Endometriosis: this occurs when uterus tissues grow outside the uterus, ovaries, tubes and even on your bladder and intestines. Most women with endometriosis experience pelvic or abdominal pains during menstrual bleeding or sex. Endometriosis can affect fertility in several ways: distorted anatomy of the pelvis, adhesions, scarred fallopian tubes, inflammation of pelvic structures, changes in hormonal balance and impaired implantation of a pregnancy and altered egg quality.

5. High Follicle Stimulating Hormones (FSH): FSH is made by the pituitary gland. It is present in men and women including children. FSH help control the menstrual cycle and stimulates the growth of eggs in the ovaries. FSH levels in women change throughout the menstrual cycle, with the highest levels before an egg is released by the ovary known as ovulation. In men FSH helps in sperm production. Usually FSH usually does not change much in men. In children FSH is usually low until puberty.

8. Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS): PCOS is a common health challenge caused by an imbalance of reproductive hormones. PCOS can caused missed or irregular menstrual periods. Irregular periods can lead to: development of ovarian cysts, infertility. Common symptoms of PCOS are: too much hair on face, chin or parts of the body where men usually have hairs; irregular menstrual cycle; acne on the face; weight gain.

9. High prolactin level: prolactin is one of several hormones produced by the pituitary gland. It stimulates milk production in women after child delivery. High prolactin level in women who are not breast feeding or give birth to a new baby causes anovulation (not ovulating) which often causes infertility in women.
