MALE INFERTILITY CAUSES AND TREATMENT
By Olajide Yusuf
Male infertility is the inability of the male to cause pregnancy in a fertile female. Male infertility is commonly due to deficiencies in the semen and the semen quality. In human it accounts for 40-50% of infertility and occurs in about 7% of matured men.
NORMAL SPERM PRODUCTION PROCESS
The male reproductive system makes, stores, and transports sperm. Male sex hormones called testosterone initiate sperm production in the two testicles. The testicles are in the two sacs called the scrotum. The sperm is usually stored in a tube called epididymis. During sexual intercourse the sperm travels from the epididymis through a tube called vas deferens to the ejaculatory ducts. When you ejaculate the sperm mix with fluid from the prostate and seminal vesicles which form semen. Semen then travels through the urethra and out of the penis into the female vagina.
CAUSES OF MALE INFERTILITY
Low sperm count (oligospermia)
Low sperm motility
Lack of sperm production (azoospermia)
Infections such as Staph
Low level of testosterone
Unhealthy lifestyles: excessive alcohol intake, wearing tight pants
Male infertility treatment depends on the cause which ranges from proper infection treatment, boosting the male sexual hormone or advising the patients to avoid harmful lifestyle practices. Eating fruits such as ripe banana okro, sweet potatoes, eggs and natural milks provide essential vitamins and amino acids essential for sperm production .
